Washington, D.C.: The White House Historical Association, 2008: "The placid appearance of the scene is set by the river, which lies across the bottom of the picture . . . . Beyond it the Indian encampment is planted snugly among the cluster of trees. The flat sweep of the prairie is measured by the sure placement of trees and smaller elements. . . . "[G]radations of the haze-veiled mountains, among which Longs Peak is prominent, round out the distance but leave the foreground dominant. . . . ". . .The elegiac mood of the painting may be interpreted as an ironic meditation upon the ideal harmony between the Indian and the land, and upon the continuing displacement and restriction of the Native Americans." |
