Born into a wealthy family in Philadelphia, Julius L. Stewart moved to Paris when he was ten and lived there for the rest of his life. He established a successful career as a portrait painter of elite American and French members of society, including outlandish characters such as Bennett. Stewart painted several group portraits using this yacht as the backdrop. The vessel’s extravagant décor was designed by McKim, Mead, and White, with accents by glassmaker Louis Comfort Tiffany.
