The Ishikawa clan was founded by Minamoto no Yoshitoki, the fifth (if not sixth) son of Minamoto no Yoshiie (Hachimantaro Yoshiie).
During the Jisho and Juei Disturbances (Genpei wars), the clan was attacked by Minamoto no Kisada, also of the Minamoto clan and a member of the Heike clan, and suffered a heavy defeat, losing much of its clan. However, when the Minamoto clan defeated the Heike clan, it regained power and expanded its influence in southern Kawachi province (present Kawachinagano City, Osaka Prefecture).
During the Kamakura period (1185-1333), the Minamoto clan became a major power in southern Kawachi. However, when the Kamakura shogunate declined and local powerful clans such as the Iyo Tachibana clan (Ochi clan), represented by Masanari Kusunoki, emerged in southern Kawachi, the clan was overwhelmed and lost power.
