Toshiaki Ichinose
Toshiaki Ichinose (一ノ瀬 俊明, born June 15, 1963) is a Prime Senior Research Scientist at the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), Japan [1], and an Affiliate Professor at the Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Nagoya University [2]. With an academic background in Geography and Civil Engineering, he is interested in various aspects of Urban Environment Systems, ranging from urban climatology, energy systems and GIS to their application in urban planning. In particular, he has performed many relevant field surveys in China and other Asian countries. He has authored many related publications including Fusion Study of Geography and Environmental Engineering (IntechOpen “Spatial Analysis, Modelling and Planning” 2018) [3]. He has served as a board member of the International Association for Urban Climate (IAUC) [4] and a member of the WMO Expert Team on Training on Urban Climatology [5]. His main recent research topic is Strategic Urban Planning and Assessment of Low-Carbon Cities. Tsukuba Science Education Meister No. 6 [6]. He uses a name of Lai Junming (赖俊明, Jimmy Laai Jeun Ming) in China.
Education
Ichinose was born in Tatsuno (Nagano Prefecture), Japan, in 1963. After graduating from Suwa Seiryo High School, he received his bachelor degree at University of Tokyo (Dept. of Geography, Faculty of Science) in 1987 and his master degree at University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Engineering (Dept. of Urban Engineering) in 1989. After this, he went through Forestry Agency at Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Japan.
Afterwards, he worked at University of Tokyo as an Assistant Professor [7] and his Ph.D. degree at University of Tokyo in 1996 [8]. After this, he went through National Institute for Environmental Studies (Tsukuba) as a Senior Research Scientist [9] and University of Freiburg (Meteorological Institute), Germany as an Invited Research Fellow (1998-1999) [10].
Ichinose’s research
Since the beginning of 1990s, he has been involved in studies to improve human comfort by controlling the urban thermal environment and strategic urban planning. This field encompasses not only the natural sciences of geography and geophysics, but also civil engineering and architecture. Geography can be used to clarify the spatio-temporal distributions of various phenomena like climate, flora, fauna, human activities on the Earth, as well as their underlying mechanisms. In contrast, environmental systems engineering, which is now the main focus of my research, emphasizes the connections among individual elements such as air, water, soil, and living organisms, and attempts to link research findings to policy-making and technical development.
It is important to expand the targets of environmental systems engineering studies and to help society appreciate their utility. His goal is to improve the research and educational system of this discipline in order to show the advantages of dealing with targets using this systemic approach, as compared to other disciplines that study these same factors individually.
He wants to promote environmental systems engineering studies to achieve urban design that incorporates environmental factors and fosters the diversity of natural ecosystems, with a focus on Asian cities, which are experiencing the fastest urbanization rate in the world. He will show how urban physical forms can be designed to take advantage of surrounding natural environments, while also considering specific political and social systems. Another aim is to contribute to global urban design by helping to shift the paradigm of urban planning through innovations that will make low-carbon cities a reality, based on knowledge obtained through social experiments that are difficult to conduct in Japan.
Professional career (Education)
He has participated in university education as an advisory professor (2001-) at East China Normal University (Department of Geography), an affiliate professor (2008-) at Nagoya University (Department of Environmental Engineering and Architecture), and a lecturer (2002-2011) at The University of Tokyo (Graduate School of Frontier Sciences). He has been in charge of the programs in civil engineering, architecture, environmental sciences, and geography as a program officer at the Research Center for Science Systems of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (2012-2015).
