モーリス・コーリス Maurice Stewart Collis

モーリス・コーリス（Maurice Stewart Collis、1889年1月10日 – 1973年1月12日）は大英帝国が植民地支配していたビルマの総督を務め、のちに東南アジアと中国に関する歴史事象を作家として書き留めた人物。

生涯

アイルランドの事務弁護士の息子としてダブリンに生まれ、1903年にラグビースクールに入学、1907年にはオックスフォード大学に入学し、歴史を学んだ。1911年にインド高等文官になり、1912年にビルマに赴任した。サガインなどでの赴任を経験した。1917年、イギリス軍はビルマ旅団を編成し、コーリスはその旅団とともにパレスチナに赴いたが、戦果はあげられなかった。1919年には休暇を取り、ヨーロッパを旅行した。1920年代にはアラカンの地方長官を務め、1920年代にはチャウピューに住み、ビルマ人、インド人、イギリス人の関係が特に難しくなった1929年から1930年には、ラングーンの地方長官を務めた。この時期のことは、彼の回想録『ビルマにおける裁判』に書かれている。彼は、カルカッタ市長のジャティンドラ・モハン・セングプタが、1930年にラングーンを短期間訪問した際に行った即興のスピーチが原因で、扇動罪で政治裁判にかけられたことや、ビルマ人に対するイギリスの商人や陸軍将校の根本的な態度を明るみに出したために政治的に問題になった2つの刑事裁判に特に注目した。

コーリスの判断は（彼自身の分析によれば）当時のビルマ英国当局にとって好ましいものとは言い難く、特に彼の上司であるバゴー支局長ブース・グラベリーの不興を買ってしまった。この最後の裁判の判決を下した後、コリスは急遽、物品管理局長のポストに移された。1934年にイギリスに帰国してからは、『シャム・ホワイト』『フォーリン・マッド』などの著書や、美術・文芸評論を数多く執筆した。65歳になってからは、絵画に没頭するようになる。

双子の弟に作家のジョン・ストュワート・コーリスと著名な医師・編集者のロバート・コーリスがいる。
