Copal is a type of en:resin, sometimes referred to as pom (the en:Maya language name). The word is derived from the en:Nahuatl language word copalli, meaning en:incense. It is sometimes likened to, or substituted for, en:amber and put in en:jewellery.

Carbon-dating has shown copal may be only a few decades to hundreds of years old (Poinar, 1999) and so often contains embedded organisms which are alive today. It comes from Agathis australis (Manila Copal) or the same genus (New Zealand Kauri Resin), Dipterocarpaceae (Dammar Resin) in SE Asia, or from legume trees including en:Hymenaea verrucosa [1] (Zanzibar and Madagascar Copal), Copaifera guibourthiana (West Africa) or Hymenaea courbaril and H. protera (Colombia and Brazil) [2].

Copal is still used by a number of [[:en:indigenous peoples of Mexico]] and [[:en:Central America]] as an [[:en:incense]], used during cermonies such as the "sweat lodge" ceremony. It is available in different forms. The hard, amber-like yellow copal is a less expensive version. The white copal, a hard, milky, sticky substance, is a more expensive version of the same [[:en:resin]].
