大学間地震学研究所連合（Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology、IRIS[1]）は、地震学データの収集と配布を通じて地球内部を探求することを目的とした大学研究コンソーシアムである。IRISのプログラムは、学術研究、教育、地震災害軽減、包括的核実験禁止条約の検証に貢献した。IRISへの支援は、全米科学財団、その他の連邦政府機関、大学、民間財団から寄せられた。IRISは5つの主要なコンポーネントをサポートした：
- データ管理センター (DMC[2])
- ポータブル・アレイによる大陸岩石圏の地震研究（PASSCAL[3]）
- 全球地震学ネットワーク（GSN[4]）
- 運搬型アレイ（USARRAY[5]）
- 教育・普及活動プログラム（EPO[6]）

IRISはワシントンD.C.にコーポレートオフィスを構えていた。
IRISの教育・公共アウトリーチプログラムは、教員や一般市民が地震学や地球科学について学び、理解を深めるためのアニメーション、ビデオ、レッスン、ソフトウェア、ポスター、ファクトシートなどを提供した。その目的は、より多くの人々に地球物理学の仕事に興味を持ってもらうことである。
IRISは研究データリポジトリ登録（e3data.org）に登録されている[7]。

2023年1月1日、IRISはUNAVCO（University Navstar Consortium）と合併し、EarthScope Consortiumを設立した[8]。

経緯
[編集]1959年、米国政府は、地下や高高度で爆発した外国の核爆発を探知・識別する国家能力を向上させることを目的とした研究活動を開始した。その結果、世界標準地震計ネットワーク（WWSSN）は当初の目的を超えて成功を収めた。WWSSNは、本来の目的だけでなく、プレートテクトニクスの新たな概念にも役立つ地震学的データを提供した。当初は国防省によって運営されていたが、1973年までに米国地質調査所（USGS）に移管された。全球地震学ネットワーク（GSN）とWWSSNを拡張・継承する必要性から、IRISコンソーシアムとの協力が1984年に始まった。GSNは元々、全米地震災害軽減プログラム（NEHRP）の下でUSGSが全額出資していたが、現在は全米科学財団が共同で支援している。
