Serena Motola (モトーラ世理奈) (Born October 8, 1998 - ) is a Japanese fashion model, actress and singer.

She is from Tokyo and affiliated with Box Corporation. She is an exclusive model for the magazine 'Soen'.

Carrer[編集]

Since childhood, she had a dream of becoming a model and submitted her applications to magazines. In 2014, during her first year of high school, she was scouted in Harajuku and joined an agency. While continuing her acting lessons as a third-generation student in the actress training project "Actress Incubation" hosted by the drama production company called Drama Design Corporation[1][2], she got the opportunity to appear as a model in the magazine "Soen". She made her debut in the November 2014 issue, which was released in January 2015, as part of the "Newcomer Special" feature.[3][4]

She gained attention for being selected as the jacket visual for the RADWIMPS' album "Human Bloom," which was released in November 2016. She also appeared on the cover of the inaugural issue of Shiseido's corporate culture magazine "Hatsubaki".[5][6] With her overwhelming impact and unforgettable presence, she was chosen as the main visual for various advertisements, including famous department stores and apparel brands, as well as fashion magazines.[7]

She was chosen as the key visual for "a 2017A/W," which took place in March 2017.[8] In the same month, she became an exclusive model for the magazine "Soen" starting from the May 2017 issue.[4][9]

After graduating from high school, she enrolled in the Fashion Distribution Department of the Bunka Fashion College in April 2017.[10][11] However, she decided to drop out and focus on her work instead.[3]

In March 2018, she made her debut at Paris Collection (Paris Fashion Week) 2018-19 A/W as a runway model for the fashion brand "UNDERCOVER".[12] She was also chosen as the subject of a photo book shot by actress Fumi Nikaido, titled "Monthly Motor Serena Motola・Summer Photo Fumi Nikaido," which was released in April of the same year.[7]

In June 2018, she made her first foray into acting in the film "Shojo Kaiko,"[注 1] where she was selected from over 200 applicants and co-starred as a double lead with Moeka Hoshi, marking her debut as a lead in a feature film.[13][14][15] In August of the same year, she made her debut in a NHK TV drama "Tomei na Yurikago"[16] and garnered attention for her portrayal of a challenging role, receiving expectations from the producer as a potentially "interesting presence" in the future.[17] In January 2019, she appeared in a commercial TV drama "Les Miserables - The Never-ending Journey."[18] In February 2020, she won the lead role in the film "Koi Koi Dotei"[19] through an audition of over 2,000 applicants.[20][21]

In July 2019, she made her debut as a singer by releasing a cover of Fishmans' representative song "Insane Baby (Ikareta Baby)" on a 12-inch single and music streaming services.[22][23][24]

In 2020, her starring film "Kaze no Denwa" was selected for the "Generation" section at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival.[25] Motola attended the premiere screening held on February 23.[26] The film received the Special Prize of the International Jury, which is equivalent to the Grand Prix.[27]

Personal life[編集]

Motola's father is of Italian-American descent and her mother is Japanese.[28] She is an only child.[3]

Her hobbies are dancing and shopping.[29] She became interested in dance after being taught by a friend who was taking dance lessons and started learning hip-hop in the 6th grade of elementary school. After entering high school, she joined the dance club. She says she is not good at creating original dances in class.[3]

Her special talent is making funny faces.[29]

She is a camera girl with more than 10 years of experience in photography. She became interested in photography when she borrowed a camera from her grandfather as a elementary school student and started taking pictures with a camera that was gifted to her by her mother. She talks about the charm of photography as being able to express her own sensibility and thoughts as visual images. She serialized her works on "Soen ONLINE" twice a month under the title "Serena Motola's 'Memories of Color'" starting in May 2018.[30][注 2]

She used to dislike her freckles during elementary and junior high school, but as she started modeling and began to receive comments like "it's a special quality that only you have", she started to think of her freckles as her own uniqueness and charm point.[28]

Regarding her acting, she stated that she wants to become an actress who can express herself more freely and play various roles, and she mentioned Yu Aoi and Hikari Mitsushima as her goals.[18]
