‘’‘Toshie Kiso‘’‘ (January 5, 1949 - ) is a Japanese accessory artist. Born in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. Her real name is Toshie Kiso. She is the leading inventor of "pure silver crochet" and "wire crochet" in Japan and the registered trademark holder of "pure silver crochet". In addition to teaching at various schools and lectures, Toshie Kiso also holds classes at her own atelier, where she has taught art clay and pure silver crochet (wire crochet) to over 200 people to date.
biography
[編集]After graduating from Keisen Jogakuen with a degree in English Literature, she joined a cosmetics company. After working there for about three and a half years, she left the company when she got married. With more time to spare in her life, she began to pursue her longtime interest in creative activities.
The Beginning of Creation
The first accessory she made was a piece using panflower (clay made from wheat flour). Around this time, the family, who had been living in Kawasaki, began to visit Yokohama, where her husband's parents lived. The owner of the gift store in the Hotel New Grand, which they visited frequently, liked her accessories, and they began exhibiting her works in a corner of the store. As she continued to exhibit there, another hotel invited her to exhibit and sell her work, and she gradually increased the number of places where she could sell her work. Later, she moved in with her husband's parents and settled in Yokohama.
Encounter with Engraving
While continuing her creative activities after settling in Yokohama, she was invited by the Hotel New Grand to work as a floral designer for about seven years. Working in the hotel and creating more frequently than before, she was exposed to more people and had the opportunity to exhibit at a department store (Nihonbashi Takashimaya Department Store). This exhibition increased the demand for more expensive accessories, so he began learning to engrave metal in search of new accessory possibilities. She began to make accessories that combined metal carving and pearls, but her specialty in clay work did not allow her enough freedom of expression, and she began to look for another material to use.
Encounter with silver clay
She was told by her engraving instructor that a silver clay product was on the market. She flew to the development company and managed to get them to do business with her, even though private transactions were not being conducted at the time. After that encounter, he began to make works with silver clay. However, because it was a newly developed product, she had to watch over it for more than 5 hours and keep adjusting the temperature, etc. It was too difficult for an individual to actually use it, so she gave up using silver clay. About two years later, she worked as a floral designer, but after a long period of physical labor, she developed a bad back and had to take a leave of absence. At that time, she saw a newspaper advertisement that the silver clay she had tried before had been improved and was now on sale to the general public, and that a workshop would be held at a retail store at the same time. Based on her previous experience, she went to take the in-store class even though she doubted whether anyone could handle it easily. There was no one else who came to take the class. The improved silver clay reduced the baking time from a long time to about 30 minutes, and the quality of the product was high and accurate enough for personal use. This led her to try silver clay once again, and she became more devoted to creating works of art. Later, Kiso, who had learned how to handle silver clay from the seller, opened a silver clay class. The number of students increased, and at one time she had more than 80 students. her encounter with silver clay was so great that she began to receive many awards for her silver clay works.
Transition to pure silver crochet
Having been a floral designer, Kiso wanted to express leaves and petals more lightly and delicately, and began to search for a method of expression. She came up with the idea of knitting pure silver wire like a knitting technique. This was the pure silver crochet. Kiso, who was active in art clay silver at the time, began teaching at Vogue Gakuen Yokohama through an introduction from the head office. When she wore a pure silver crochet of her own creation to work, she was highly praised by her colleagues. Later, a colleague introduced her to the editorial department of Vogue, which led to the publication of a book (Heart Warming Life Series: Beaded Accessories knitted with Pure Silver). This book was also published overseas and attracted a great deal of attention. This event led her to produce pure silver crochet accessories, and she also published books on the subject with other companies. Since pure silver crochet jewelry was so innovative at the time, it was featured on "NHK's Fashionable Studio" from around 2004, and she served as an instructor on the program.
