Spermatophyta, w:Spermatopsida is the traditional seed-plant division of the kingdom w:Plantae.
A more traditional classification groups all the seed plants together as follows:
- Spermatophyta
- w:Gnetopsida, including w:Gnetum, w:Welwitschia, w:Ephedra
- w:Cycadopsida, the cycads
- w:Ginkgoopsida, the w:ginkgo
- w:Pinopsida, the conifers, aka Coniferopsida
- w:Magnoliopsida, the flowering plants, aka Angiospermopsida
A more modern classification splits these groups into individual divisions:
- w:Gnetophyta, including w:Gnetum, w:Welwitschia, w:Ephedra
- w:Cycadophyta, the cycads
- w:Ginkgophyta, the w:ginkgo
- w:Pinophyta, the conifers, aka Coniferophyta
- w:Magnoliophyta, the flowering plants
- w:Magnoliopsida, the dicots
- w:Liliopsida, the monocots
There are some botanists who believe that the Magnoliopsida is actually polyphyletic; that is, that it should be split into at least two other classes.
