Horikiri Iris Garden

[編集]
Horikiri Iris Garden

Horikiri Iris Garden (堀切の花菖蒲, Horikiri no hanashōbu) is one of the One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. It was made by the ukiyo-e artist Hiroshige Utagawa and published in 1857[1].

Description

[編集]

Irises spread all over the picture, and viewers can be seen among the irises. The perspective is used in the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. Among them, this picture stands out especially[2].

Horikiri was originally a wetland and was suitable for cultivating irises[3].

All the irises have different patterns. It is presumed that they developed varieties of irises by gathering variant species from various places[4].

Current

[編集]

Before the war, Horikiri had multiple iris gardens. One of them was opened to the public as a park which was owned by Tokyo in 1960. Then, the ownership was transferred to Katsushika Ward in 1975, and now it exists as the Horikiri Iris Garden (Horikiri shōbuen)[5].
