Dreamcast-Scene

Konnichiwa! Currently Dreamcast-Scene, a wiki-based website for all about the Dreamcast videogaming console, is looking for Japanese speaking editors who are interested in building up a Japanese sub-site of the articles and news. We even don't have a clue if Japanese characters work on it. Am I allowed to ask here about looking for Japanese editors and how can I contact them? Thanks a lot!

京都 - asking for help from Kyoto residents

はじめまして - and apologies for not really being able to speak Japanese.

ちょっと、ちょっと　日本語のべんきょうをしました。 I also have to apologize because what I am asking is really off-topic (ie. not really about the Japanese Wikipedia):

Some of you may listen to podcasts (RSS feed-linked MP3 audio files). Now it looks like the most popular English language podcast coming from Japan — theKyoto Podcast by Tim Burgess — is in danger of dying an untimely death. Sadly, for mainly buerocratic reasons (that also have to due with Tim's particular case and situation), Japanese immigration did not allow Tim back into Japan after he had left the country briefly. He now finds himself suddenly back in Australia — and his Kyoto Podcast looks like it may thus come to an abrupt end.

Are there any Kyoto residents out there who would like to help? Tell the world more about your city? Help keep this fantastic audio programme alive?

I haven't actually told Tim that I am asking this question here and I'm not affiliated with him, other than having listened to his podcast and emailed back and forth a few times. So if you're angry that I'm daring to ask here, please be angry at me and complain to me. But if you know the Kyoto Podcast and would like to help, please contact Tim. If you don't know the Kyoto Podcast (http://www.kyotopodcast.jp/), you can listen to it in iTunes, for example. Tim has done some excellent work. I'm thinking that even if he won't be allowed to return to Japan, maybe some of you who are interested could record audio and email it to Tim and he could continue making the show. He speaks some Japanese, so even if you don't speak English, as long as you are in Kyoto or Japan you could still help: record sounds or just contribute some local knowledge/stories from Kyoto and/or Japan, and help keeping alive a very positive free podcast that tells the world more about Kyoto and Japan.

Surname (family name) of Dutch/Japanese child

Hello, I would like to ask a question on the Japanese Wikipedia, since this is a question about the Japanese law system... (ごめんなさい、日本語はできません。)

My Japanese girlfriend and I (I am Dutch) are now living in Holland and are expecting a little aka-chan. Before the baby is born, we have to go to the City Hall, where I can "recognize" the baby, that is to say, since we are not married (yet), I have to state that it's mine and we have to chose a family name for the baby. Now, according the Dutch system, it's possible to give the baby the family name of the fater OR the mother. It doesn't matter if you are married or not! You have to make this choice for the first born, all children born after that, will get the same name as the first born.

Now we are seriously thinking about taking HER name, since I never really liked mine and I don't have a close bond with my family. Besides, my name is too "Dutch" and her name has more of an international sound to it, so it can be used in both Holland and Japan (or anywhere else in the western world), which is a big advantage for our kid in the future, if it should decide to go study or work in Japan. Although I think my father won't be too happy about it, he'll grow over it and besides, the family line is already saved, since he has brothers with (male) children... The name is not on the edge of extinction or anything...

Because I do think it's important that my children carry the same name as the father, in the near future, we want to get married and then I want to take her name as my surname, which is also possible in Holland. Only in the passport I will keep my name, where it will only say "married to ...(wife's name)..." So this is a bit different from the Japanese system...

Is there anybody here who has been in a similar situation? What are your experiences?

Furthermore: since the child will be born before we are married (which is quite common in Holland, I know it's not in Japan), how about the Japanese sytem? Can I still recognize my baby as MINE according the Japanese law system? Will I be registered as the father. And after we get married, how will the situation change according the Japanese system? Can I be registered as the father, although the baby doesn't even carry my family name???

For your own name change you will need to consult with the Japanese consular section. I am not sure about that part especially if you want to keep your name on your passport which I presume is Dutch. If you want to change nationality and become Japanese there would probably be no problem. I think it may be difficult to keep 2 names. Just get an answer from the Japanese authorities. Best of luck

I have created the articlemutilation of Japanese war dead in the English language wikipedia. However I start feeling overwhelmed by American and Australian editors that go around military webpages trying to recruit support for their viewpoints.

I therefore thought it would be a good idea to try to bring some Japanese views into the topic, and ask if there is any Japanese literature that can be added. If there is a Japanese military issues portal then perhaps someone reading this could please copy this request also to that portal, and any other Japanese Wiki portals where there might be people with knowledge and interest in the topic? Perhaps the Japanese article on this already exists?

Hi. First, excuse me if my adding of comment like this is not the proper way. Please guide me to do so correctly. I am a Japanese citizen, consider myself moderate in political views, and deeply disgusted/horrified by the pictures and the description in this article.I don't know if I should either criticize the Americans, justify their acts, or refute the accuracy of the whole thing itself. I just think the tone of the article is exceedingly slanderous. For whatever that's happened, I hope the article becomes less...unpleasant as I know I will be stuck with the image for a while. As I understand it there is now a very basic "stub" on Japanese wiki: 米軍兵による日本軍戦死者の遺体の切断, perhaps you can discuss it there also. I agree with you that it can be powerful stuff,this image, which was picture of the week in LIFE magazine, eventually became known also in Japan, and together with other known fact such as the fact that U.S. President Roosevelt was given a letter opener carved out of a Japanese soldiers arm bone by a Congressman, (who apologized that he could not give the president a bigger piece of Japanese anatomy) led to a deep fear of the Americans in Japan, and it has been estimated that this played a role in the mass suicides in Okinawa. Here is another pictureAmerican troops 'murdered Japanese PoWs'.

Now that I'm here again, 2 more questions. An Australian editor who has been working on trying to remove the article has tried to explain away the fact that when the dead Japanese soldiers bodies were taken home from the Marinara islands 60% of them were missing their skulls. He argued that this was due to a Japanese custom of only taking pieces of the body home. Is there such a Japanese tradition, and could it be used to explain the large number of headless bodies?

The second question, does anyone have any good info on the rapes of Japanese women by the occupation forces, for example the 10,000 that were raped on Okinawa? I did some thinking, and although perhaps this is not the best place to reply to the posting by LT above, I think it is an important topic that perhaps someone reading this page can help with. I am specifically referring to your sentence ...or refute the accuracy of the whole thing itself. Perhaps this paper that I can recomend can help you understand your reaction.
