Giorgio: Thanks for your note in my discussion page. The document in question appears to be a certificate that a madal honoring participation in battles (jugun kisho) had been presented to Lt. Ernesto Bruzagli. According to the Japanese Wikipedia article, jugun kisho is a medal given to a soldier who participated in battles in a war. From the the years (years 37-38 of the Meiji Era, i.e. 1904-1905) referenced in the document, you can tell that the war in question was indeed the Russo-Japanese War. It is not at all clear from the document whether Lt. Bruzagli did in fact participate in the battles or the award was honorary.

Rough translation of the body of the document follows:

"A medal of honor (jugun kisho) is hereby given, on March 30, 1906, to Ernesto Bruzagli, Lieutenant of the Italian Navy, on application by the Naval Minister of Japan and with the Emperor's approval, pursuant to the Regulation Relating to the Medals Honoring Participation in Battles (1904-05). Dated April 1, 1906."

"After review of this certificate, [the presentation to Lt. Bruzagli of the Medal] has been recorded on the Roll of Medals of Honor."

Note that military affairs and Japanese history are not my areas of interest and my choice of terminology (or, for that matter, any part of my description of the document or my translation) may not be appropriate. Hi, Giorgio. The document in question seems to be a certificate that a gold cup was presented to Captain Burzagli to honor him. From the document itself, I could not detect any background or events that led to the presentation. The translation would be:

"To Captain Ernesto Burzagli of Italian Navy:

One gold cup is hereby presented.

August 30, 1922

Count Ohgimachi, President of Decorations Bureau [seal]"

Note that I could not phonetically read Count Ohgimachi's first name. (The characters that represent his first name could be pronounced several ways. Also note that ranks and honors of Capt. Burzagli and Count Ohgimachi are also on the document but I could not locate offcial translation. The literal translation of Capt. Burzagli's honor would be "the third order". Likewise, Count Ohgimachi seems to carry the rank and honor of "right second rank and the Grand Cordon of the Order."
