インド・ヨーロッパ語学において、サーモン問題^[1]（Lachsargument^[2]）とは、ゲルマン語とバルト・スラブ語における鮭に対応する語の語源学に基いて、ステップ地方ではなくバルト海地方に印欧語の源を求める、すでに否定された説である^[3]。

以下のように理由付けされる。ゲルマン語派、バルト語派、スラブ語派におけるアトランティックサーモンにあたる語は共通の印欧祖語語根*laḱs^[4]によるものなので、印欧語の原郷はその言語と題材がどちらも存在するところ、つまり北中央ヨーロッパにあるに違いない。この説は初めドイツの文献学者オットー・シュレーダーが1983年に提出した^[5]。19世紀後期から20世紀初期にわたって、特にドイツの学界において、議論がつづいた。

1953年にドイツのインド学者ポール・シームが、コーカサス地方で見つかったlaḱs-の後継形態は、アトランティックサーモンではなくマスを指すという説を提出した^[6]。アメリカの文献学者ジョージ・シェルマン・レーンは1970年の会議論文において、この説に同意した。「私の意見では、問題の名前はおそらくもともとアトランティックサーモンを指していたのではなく、むしろコーカサス地方のマスを指していた」^[7]。これはクルガン説を支持している。
