エドワード・エルガー出版（えどわー・どえるがー しゅっぱん英: Edward Elgar Publishing）は、社会科学と法学の専門書、雑誌、オンライン・リソースの出版社である[2]。

概要

当出版社は家族経営の独立系出版社として1986年設立、チェルトナムとキャンバリー（イギリス）、アメリカマサチューセッツ州ノーザンプトンに事業所を構える[3]。専門は学術界および実務家向けとして経済学、法律、経営学、公共政策、社会政策自然環境の分野で出版活動を続ける[4]。既出の書籍は累計で4500冊以上、新刊は年に300冊超である[5]。

沿革

社名に創業者エドワード・エルガー[6]の名を冠するとおり（2012年時点で会長）、家族経営の会社として発足した。創業者は1986年にグロスターシャーに移り住み、ミドルトンの自宅書斎で事業を起こした[7]。

1987年に出版した経済分野の書籍第1陣は、マーク・ブローグの著書[8]、デイヴィッド・コーツ（英語版）とジョン・ヒラード（英語版）の共著[9]およびJ・L・フォードによる2刊[注 1]を含む。

受賞と評価

トムソン・ロイターは社会科学引用指数（2012年集計）として出版物の論文引用件数を調べ、当社を経営学で第1位、法学で同じく第2位、経済・経営部門で同4位、政治学と国際関係で同6位と述べた[12]。

2013年にも前年に重ねて「ブックセラー（英語版）」賞が贈られ、授賞理由は厳しい市場で記録的な販売部数を達成した点、デジタル・プラットフォーム「Elgaronline」の発足とその「ハイクラスな編集、デザイン、制作」としている[13]。

ロンドン『ブックセラー』誌が選ぶ年間出版業界賞（2014年表彰）で「年間独立系学術・教育・専門出版社賞」（Independent Academic, Educational and Professional Publisher of the Year）を受賞した。同年、独立系出版社連盟（英語版）が選ぶIPG賞は出版物見本市のフランクフルト・ブックフェアで表彰式を行い、年間学術・専門出版社賞を当社に贈った。前述の『ブックセラー』誌は出版業界の実業誌であり、当社について「その著名な著者陣を遇するケアと起業家精神にあふれたアプローチ」に注目したとしており、IPGは「エドワード・エルガーは実に事業に専心し、時勢によく反応して想像力に富む。比較的、規模の小さな出版社でありながら、その何倍もの大手と同じくらい革新的」[14]と評した。

独立系出版社連盟（英語版）のIPG賞（Independent Publishers Guild）では2012年、2013年の最終候補に残り、選考委員会は「売上の増加と質の高い出版。（中略）オーナー経営のビジネスの機敏さを象徴し、その分野のリーダーとして地位を確立、革新的な製品[15][16]を世に問うた」とされた[17][18][19]。

IPGは2015年、オンライン電子書籍ならびに学術専門誌のコンテンツを扱う当社のプラットフォーム「www. ElgarOnline.com」を独立系出版社賞3賞に推薦[20]、審査員は「サイトのデザインおよびバックエンドの優れた技術」に言及し、また貧困国の図書館に無料コンテンツを提供する手法を称賛した[21]。2015年3月には「ブックセラー」賞の年間最優秀独立系学術・教育・専門出版社部門の最終候補にも残り、同年5月の表彰式で受賞が発表された。ブックセラー[注 2]は、当社が「前例のない3回目の受賞に速歩で近づいている」と述べた[22]。

主な賞は過去4年に6件にのぼり、代表的な講評はIPG「2017年フォックス・ウィリアムズ年間独立出版社賞」（Fox Williams Independent Publisher of the Year）の審査会[注 3][23][注 4]で「断固として前向きな企業姿勢」の表れとして法学系の出版やエルガーオンライン（電子プラットフォーム）の構築に手を広げた点に言及がある。また当社は「非常に経営感覚に秀でた収益性の高い企業であり、著者との堅固な提携関係を築き優れた配慮で遇し、一貫して顧客サービスに心を砕く」と評された。同じ授賞式プロクエスト社（英語版）が選ぶ「2017年最優秀学術・専門出版社賞」（Academic & Professional Publisher of the Year Award 2017）も贈られている[24]。

事業の展開

学術専門誌の発行事業は2010年に『ケインズ経済学レビュー（英語版）』（現行）から開始、最近は『ケンブリッジ国際法ジャーナル』（Cambridge International Law Journal）など多数の専門誌を発行する[25][26][27]。

電子出版は「エルガーオンライン」（Elgaronline、2013年[28]）に先立ち、著者が仕事と研究について議論する場「エルガーブログ」（英: Elgarblog、2012年[29]）がある。

著名な著者

著者陣にノーベル経済学賞受賞者を数名、抱え、エリノア・オストロムもその一人（2011年受賞[30]）。
