メロディック・ハードコア (Melodic Hardcore) は、ギターのメロディに強い重点を置いたハードコア・パンクのサブジャンル。メロディックハードコアの定義は広いと言えるが、通常リズムは早いテンポであり、メロディックでディストーションのかかったギターリフが用いられることが多く、ヴォーカルスタイルはシャウトやスクリームなどが多い。しかし、一言でメロディックハードコアといっても非常に多様であり、バンドによってスタイルは異なっている。バッド・レリジョンやディセンデンツなどのパイオニアの中には、パンクロックの範疇を超えて影響を与えているものもいる。メロディックパンクという用語は、メロディックハードコアとスケートパンクの両方のバンドをさすことが多い[1]。日本における略称は「メロコア」。

経緯

ポップ・パンクと混同されがちだが、NOFXやBAD RELIGIONといった代表的バンドの人脈からもわかるとおり、そのルーツは70年代のパンク・ロックではなく、80年代のハードコア・パンクにある。メロコアとは日本だけでの呼び名であるとの誤解が多いが、実際90年代初頭当時、マキシマム・ロックンロールやFLEXといったファンジン誌上では、BAD RELIGIONやNOFXといったバンドがmelodic hardcoreとしてレビューされていた。

音楽の特徴

最近のメロディックハードコアバンドの多くが、エモの要素も取り入れており、ハードコアパンクの要素よりもメロディにかなりの重点を置いている[2]。ポストハードコアやメロディックメタルコアから影響を受けているバンドもいる[3][4]。

ザ・ゴースト・インサイド、Blood Youth、Climates、Hundredthのようなバンドはメタルコアともメロディックハードコアとも呼ばれる。The White Noiseはメロディックハードコアとポスト・ハードコアの融合とされており、While She Sleepsもメタルコアとメロディックハードコアの要素を合体させたバンドと考えられている[5][6][7][8][9][10] 。 現代のメロディックハードコアシーンで活動するCasey、La Dispute、Being as an Oceanなどのバンドはポスト・ロック、ポストブラックメタル、スポークン・ワードなどの要素を取り入れている[11][12][13][14][15]。

日本において「メロコア」と呼称される一連のバンド群は、音楽性については、ほとんどポップ・パンクやスケート・パンクのそれである。

歴史

ディセンデンツは1980年代に、メロディックハードコアとポップパンクの両者に重要な影響を及ぼしたバンドである。

初期シーンの発展 (1980年代–1990年代)

最初期のメロディック・ハードコアは1980年代初頭に、カリフォルニアのハードコアパンクシーンから生まれた。例えば、1978年に結成されたディセンデンツなどがいる。彼らの初期の作品はシンプルで、ポップミュージックに影響されたパンクロックだったが、このメロディックな志向をハードコアと組み合わせるようになり、のちのメロディックハードコアとポップパンクのシーンに影響を与えた[16]。バッド・レリジョンは1979年にロサンゼルスで結成され、似たような文脈でプレイしていたが、彼らのアプローチはより「怒りのこもったもの」であり、政治的な熱も帯びていた[17]。デビューアルバムの『How Could Hell Be Any Worse?』は1981年にレコーディングされている[18]。

The Faithの1983年のEP『Subject to Change』はメロディックハードコアの最初の作品の一つであると考えられており、バッド・レリジョンやディセンデンツらの作品と同じくらい重要であるとされている[19]。この作品で彼らは初期のハードコアパンク一直線なサウンドから、より複雑でメロディックなサウンドへと変化しており、内省的な歌詞も取り入れるようになっている。このリリースはポスト・ハードコアへ影響を与えたことでも著名である[20]。

Dag Nastyは1980年代半ばに結成されているが、彼らはワシントンDCのハードコアシーンに属していたメロディック・ハードコアの中心的なバンドである[21]。1988年には、Allが結成されているが、解散したディセンデンツのメンバーが3人所属していた。Allはディセンデンツと広い意味では似た文脈に属する音楽をプレイしており、最初はDag NastyのDave Smalleyがフロントマンを務めていた[18]。Gorilla Biscuitsは1980年代の後期にニューヨークのハードコアシーンに現れ、ユースクルーという名で知られるメロディックなハードコアのサブジャンルをプレイしていた。ユースクルー自体は、7 Secondsから大きな影響を受けていた。ニュージャージーのTurning Pointもユースクルームーヴメントから現れたが、後期の作品では、メロディックハードコアを志向しており、より複雑な音楽と内省的な歌詞を取り入れている[22]。

1994年にはH2Oが、ワシントンDCシーンのメロディックな要素と、ニューヨークやカリフォルニアのハードコアパンクの要素を融合させた音楽性でシーンに現れた。Lifetimeは、ポップパンクやメロディックハードコアから大きな影響を受けている著名なエモグループである[23]。そのほかのメロディックハードコアバンドとともに、Fall Out BoyやSaves the Dayなどの後続のポップパンクグループに影響を与えている[24][25]。 Lifetimeが解散し、その後何人かのメンバーはKid Dynamiteを結成した[26]。1990年代には、"Epi-Fat"サウンド(スケート・パンクの一種。著名なバンドが在籍したEpitaph RecordsやFat Wreck Chordsといったレーベルの名前から命名されている。)が人気となり、NOFXやStrung Outがディセンデンツやバッド・レリジョンなどのメロディックハードコアバンドの音楽性と近いことをやっている[27][28][29][30]。

現代のメロディックハードコア (2000年代–現在)

Blood Youthは2014年に結成されたモダン・メロディック・ハードコアバンド。

1999年に結成されたRise Againstは2004年にデビューアルバム『Siren Song of the Counter Culture』のリリースで商業的成功を収めた。他に成功したバンドとしては、Strike Anywhere[31]、Consumed[32]、Ignite[33]、Belvedere[34]、A Wilhelm Scream[35]などがいる。一方で2000年代初頭から中頃にかけて、Killing the Dream、Modern Life Is War、The Hope Conspiracy、Sinking Ships、Have Heart、Verse、The Carrier、Ruiner、This Is Hell、Comeback Kidらの作品によって、このジャンルは変貌を遂げているが、これらのバンドの多くは主要なハードコアレーベルであるBridge 9 RecordsやDeathwish Inc.に所属していた。その後、2009年ごろまでに、「Defeater、Touché Amoré、ザ・ゴースト・インサイド、カウンターパーツ、Being as an Ocean、Stick to Your Guns、Vannaなどのバンドがメロディック・ハードコアシーンの新しい顔になった」[36][37]ことで、メロディック・ハードコアとポスト・ハードコアやメタルコアの領域が重なる現代の状況を作り出した。

メロディック・ハードコアの領域を出たり入ったりしたバンドは数知れないが、Beartoothは2ndアルバム『Aggressive』で、彼らが従来プレイしていた伝統的なハードコアパンクのサウンドから[38]、 よりメロディック・ハードコアを連想させるようなスタイルへと方向を転換している[39]。Hundredthはメタルコアとメロディック・ハードコアを融合させたスタイルでキャリアをスタートしたが、4thアルバム『Rare』[7]ではシューゲイザーへと音楽性を変えている。伝統的なメロディック・ハードコアバンドのStrung Outは『Transmission.Alpha.Delta』でヘヴィメタルに強く影響された音楽を奏でており[40]、AFIは2003年に発表した『Sing The Sorrow』でより大衆受けするサウンドへと舵を切っている[41][42][43]。The White Noiseは、メロディック・ハードコアバンドになる前の最初の2枚のアルバムでエレクトロニコアをプレイしていた[44]。
