Reliable sources for voice actors

Hello. I have a bit of a concern. On the Japanese language article for Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Natsuko Kuwatani is listed as the voice of Mist. However, according to this tweet, Miho Miyagawa confirmed that she actually voiced the character in question. As such, I corrected it. Still, should we consider using this tweet as a reliable source?

@Sjones23: Hi. Thank you for pointing it out. According to my survey, Mist from Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn was listed on Ms. Miyagawa's profile page as of December 7, 2018. It's self-published, but I think it's possible to use it as a source per en:WP:SELFSOURCE (corresponding to WP:SELFSOURCE in Japanese Wikipedia). The same applies to her tweet.
Just letting you know, some anonymous users claim that not Miyagawa-san but Natsuko Kuwatani-san actually played Mist (for example, [1] or [2]). However, it would be difficult to reflect that in Wikipedia without a verifiable and reliable source.

Can someone link following reference 地名・国名・人名の漢字表記 to Wayback Machine? It's used in articles such as Uzbekistan,

@Horizon Sunset: I checked the contents of the broken link you showed us. But unfortunately, Wikipedia doesn't allow you to use non-authoritative personal web pages as sources (see en:WP:RSSELF). If you want to add the country names written in kanji (Chinese characters) to the articles, you need to provide us with a reliable source first. Thank you for your understanding.

@Stck w: I was only trying to fix the dead link but I did find some references for that. For Uzbekistan, I found "有澤玲『宛字書きかた辞典』柏書房、2000年。ISBN 4-7601-1826-8  from 国名の漢字表記一覧" Not sure if that works.

@Horizon Sunset: I understand the situation, and thank you for your information. I also think that how to spell in kanji might be introduced in the book titled "宛字書きかた辞典". However, in the article "国名の漢字表記一覧", the number of pages in the book referred to as the source is not specified, so it is not sufficient from the viewpoint of verifiability to reflect it as it is. I will drop by a nearby library and check this book tomorrow.--stck_w (Talk/Edits) 2020年9月6日 (日) 19:09 (UTC)

@Stck w: OK thanks so much!--Horizon Sunset会話2020年9月6日 (日) 20:15 (UTC)

@Horizon Sunset: I'd like to report the survey results. First, from page 47 to 48 of the book "宛字書きかた辞典", I was able to find the characters of "月即別" and "月祖伯" as the article 国名の漢字表記一覧 says. But they are defined in the book as the name of ethnic group, the en:Uzbeks, not the country name. In addition, I found that another book "宛字外来語辞典" also lists "月即別" and "月祖伯" on page 156, however, which are defined as en:Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic established in 1924. In fact, unlike Afghanistan and Pakistan (アフガニスタン and パキスタン in Japanese), which are mentioned in 国名の漢字表記一覧, "月即別" does not reflect the suffix en:-stan, so I think it seems to be inappropriate for the country name.
To conclude, "月即別" seems to be the word used for the Uzbeks or Uzbek SSR, and it does not mean Republic of Uzbekistan today. If there is no problem with you, I would like to remove "月即別" or "月祖伯" from the articles ウズベキスタン and 国名の漢字表記一覧, and then write down the survey results above in the talk pages of them.

Matcha vs. Matcha

Hello ja Wikipedians!
My question is if there is any name difference in Japan between the ground tea leaves and the beverage you make from said powder. When I search for "Matcha" on Google, the powder and the beverage comes up alike. The article on en.wikipedia however only talks about " finely ground powder". Since where I live people use it for both I wonder if there a special name for the hot tea or is Matcha also both in Japan? Thanks for your help!

Hi, @D-Kuru:, interesting question, and Matcha Market Analysis By Grade gives you an outline that it is rather recent Maccha has attracted interests from outside Japan. You can say even domestic consumptions of powdered green tea as casual beverage is rather new, or I guess it is safe to note that maccha is applied to both the powder and the drink in Japan as well recently. Maccha抹茶 written in Chinese characters has the first letter Matsu originally been attributed to "applying medication", indicating it has been used for herbal medication before medieval age, which you don't remember today.
The following is my personal idea, or it may reflect my Osaka area background. Usually, when you say Maccha (till 1990s), it meant higher priced powdered green tea. The "thin tea", or what you will enjoy at most tea ceremonies, are called usucha薄茶, applying smaller portions of powdered tea, while for "thick tea", or koicha濃茶 using top notch powdered tea in generous portions; they are hard to sip unless you make unpleasant slurping sound aloud.
The instant maccha sold as sweetened and premixed in small satchels is a trendy consumers' item. Before major franchised coffee shops started offering green tea flavored milk/soy milk drinks, a Kyoto tea shop claims they originated casual powdered tea for everyday consumption, but has never been called maccha.

Getting Japanese-language sources for the Concrete High School girl case and the manga 17-sai

Re: the article on the Concrete High School Girl Case (a 1988 kidnapping resulting in death of the victim in 1989) and the manga en:17-sai. (cf: not en:17 Years for Saori Minami’s song), I'm looking to see if there is a Japanese source that definitively states that 17 Years was influenced by the concrete case.

Also the English version of the concrete case does not use the best sources (some personal blogs at times) because there is a lack of reliable sources in English. The Anglophone media seems to have not covered the case that much in the late 1980s/early 1990s, though there are more recent articles from The Japan Times.

返信 (WhisperToMe宛) , hi, allow me to fix your link pointing to manga (ja:17歳。), not Saori’s song. While the jawp article (&oldid=75091546 dated T10:54:38; 22 November 2019 (UTC9 by ジョニー雷電) lacks reliable sources, it states that the manga has no direct link to the juvenile crime case itself but modeled after it for manga’s plot motif, no citation given: since I am not quite familiar with manga of this genre, can you please share why you think the homicide case and manga story is closely related? That would help me expand the range of biblio database I would look into. FYI, I quote from jawp article as:
  • ...「女子高生コンクリート詰め殺人事件」をプロットのモチーフとしているが、同事件を取り上げたものではなく接点は無い。...” unquote.
The other thing I am not quite sure is, as you are fully aware, manga in Japan is to some degree “edited” or retouched when reformatted into Single title単行本Tankobon. Let me indicate that jawp article states that “17-sai.” was published as a serial in a magazine, and it had a special column associated to it and an invited guest commentator exchanged ideas with the plot writer Seiji Fujii on recreating the psychology in manga against the real crime. What bothers me is inside the parentheses, and it reads to me that conversation was dropped from the Tankobon context and not published in a fixed form. Does it indicate anything to you?
  • quote “...連載時は著名人と原作者による劇中の心理感と現実の少年犯罪についての対談コラムが掲載されていた(単行本では再編集されたうえで掲載)。...” unquote.
The jawp article has a commercial film about the homicide case under “see also” section, which makes me get puzzled a bit, but you might have better idea how crime-manga-film correlated to each other in this case..
I will try anyway some biblio data search, and maybe you have any particular field you wish to cover with citation?
@Omotecho: Thanks for the feedback! One can tell that inspiration came from the concrete girl case because various details of the concrete girl case and 17-sai together (the victim being attacked by one person and then being given a fake offer of assistance from another person so she can be kidnapped, the forced phone call to the parents, the unwillingness of other people to help the girl).
As for the guest commentator, I read an unofficial scanlation of the 17-sai. manga but did not see this conversation, so it is possible that one may have to buy a copy of the original magazine to see it. I'm hoping Japanese libraries store copies of the magazines.
As for the information I would like to have, generally the aspects covered in secondary sources, such as why the series was created, what the author hoped to portray, and also opinions from critics of literary works.
返信 (WhisperToMe宛) , too bad libraries has been closed since mid-March in my town, and I have to admit and retire from this conversation before library reopens. Tried on the web if “17-sai.” has copyright friendly digitized version, but not avail. We need a hardcopy to confirm to cite what you wish to write, no? Or I am not 100% sure without any source if the creator of “17-sai.” totally denies that his imagination was influenced by a criminal case or not, just suggested what I read on jawp is suggesting another view, but that mention also lacks citation to which issue of the manga magazine. Maybe you have an access to database behind paywall, and look up the metadata which issue has that interview ?
I have tried two bilingual biblio database, National Diet Library and CiNii. For NDL, couldn’t find the manga magazine we discuss here. For CiNii, database of database for university libraries: writings on/related to “17-sai.” by academics zero hit. CiNii do source historical manga magazines, but not that magazine we discuss here. I have not tried website for Tachikawa City Manga Library立川漫画図書館Tachikawa Manga Toshokan since they mostly collects tankobon.
Off topic: when you feel unfair that global manga readers don’t have access to some bonus contents, think this way: the book publishing system in Japan has a unique law for paper media, a saihan-ho再販法, that was designed to support publishers’ monetary flow, which gave reasons to reuse manga contents as tankobon to make more money, when creators’ copyright had been limited toward putting their works on manga magazines and that was all. Maybe it was Tezuka Osamu who willingly agreed to publish tankobon for his stories without commission (payment), but no source at hand here again. Cheers, and please keep safe, --Omotecho会話2020年4月25日 (土) 16:15 (UTC)

  • (English) In Japanese Wikipedia, there are very few Furiganas in articles, except perhaps in the first paragraph explaining the pronunciation of the article name. Therefore, for non-native speakers, knowledge in Kanjis (especially regarding their meaning) is crucial. For example, Chinese native speakers might not have too much difficulty in reading 壬午軍乱 if they have basic knowledge on Japanese grammar. Therefore, it is hard to tell which JLPT level is required to read Wikipedia (as it does not put much emphasis on learning Kanjis). Whichever case you are, I suggest starting with topics you are familiar with, so it is easier to guess the meaning of any unknown vocabulary or grammar.

I recently moved the English WP page w:en:Bible translations into Hawaiian to w:en:Bible translations into the languages of Hawaii, because the content was about Bible translations into Hawaiian as well as into Hawaiian Pidgin. However, the Japanese version of the article, ハワイ語訳聖書, has the same problem: it is called "Bible translations into Hawaiian", but contains information about Hawaian Pidgin translations of the Bible. Therefore, I am asking any Japanese speaker if he or she could rename the page into something like "Bible translations into the languages of Hawaii", e.g. like for the languages of Africa But isn't it LTA:SAN instead of KANAKOBA? Or do you think they are the same person?

Hello Japanese Wikipedians! This template containing 2 unknown compounds, it's iron(II) manganate (FeMnO4</sub)> and iron(II) cyanate (Fe(OCN)2). Can these links maybe removed? Thanks you. (Note: Sorry if you don't understand, because my English is not good.)

Moving files to Commons and deleting files that have been moved to Commons

Hi! I do not speak Japanese so I have to use Google Translate.

I asked about files and Commons here: Wikipedia‐ノート:Wikimedia_Commonsに画像をアップしよう#Moving_files_to_Commons.

It was suggested, that I also asked here where there is a better chance to hear from English speaking users.

I had 2 questions:

  1. Is there any reason why files are not deleted when they have been moved to Commons?
  2. Is there any organized project to move files to Commons?

If files are moved to Commons they can be used on other wikis too. And if the local files are deleted it is easier to locate the files, that have not been moved yet.

Japanese Wikipedia have a lot of files so I have no chance to check or move them all alone. Especially because I do not speak Japanese and have to work really slow. So I hoped to find local users to work with.

@MGA73: The answer to 1 is because the file count is too high and now a bot flag request for deleting those files is ongoing; the answer to 2 is probably no. In any case, from the various discussions we had I think this section can be marked as resolved.
