Kirazuri

[編集]

Kirazuri is one of the printing methods in Ukiyoe printmaking using mica powder. It is used for the background in portraits, and depending on the base color, it is called Shiro-kirazuri, Kuro-kirazuri, and Beni-kirazuri .

Type of Kirazuri

[編集]

“Surikira”, which is printing method where mica is mixed with the paint color.

"Makikira" which peppers the mica on the surface using a sprinkling tool. Adhesive is applied onto the paper, mica is shaken over it and attaches to it. Unnecessary mica is removed with a brush.

”Okikira” where a mixture of mica and glue are placed with a brush.

Features of Kirazuri

[編集]

Kira literally means sparkling. It's easy to understand if you imagine a glitter sticker, but you can enjoy that sparkle only by picking it up and moving it. If you don't move it, you'll only see a gray color.
