Apple TV+（アップルティービープラス）は、日本時間2019年11月1日^[2]にサービスを開始したAppleによるビデオ・オン・デマンドサービス。オーバー・ザ・トップ型（英語版）の登録制サービスとなっており、広告無しで作品を視聴することができる。

2019年3月25日にスティーブ・ジョブズシアターで開催されたApple Special Eventでの発表時には、オプラ・ウィンフリー、スティーブン・スピルバーグ、ジェニファー・アニストンといったセレブリティがステージに登場した^[3]^[4]^[5]。

Apple TV+のコンテンツはアップルの公式サイトおよびApple TVアプリを介して視聴できるが、2019年中に自社製を含む数多くの家電製品で視聴できるようにすることが予定されている^[6]。

また、Apple TV+と同時に定額の月額料金で映像コンテンツを提供するビデオアグリゲーションサービスであるApple TV Channels（英語版）が発表された。このサービスはApple TV+と共に映像コンテンツを広く配信し、サービスの収益を増やすための活動の一環とされている^[7]。

歴史

発端

アップルは長年、テレビのストリーミングサービスを開始することに関心を持っているとの噂が立っており、同社はこれまで様々なテレビ企業とコンテンツ配信に関する交渉を行っていた。しかし、アップル側が出した要望に相手企業側が難色を示したことにより、交渉はいずれも決裂することとなった。ウォール・ストリート・ジャーナルが報じた内容によれば、これら決裂の原因には交渉にあたった同社のソフトウェアおよびサービス担当上級副社長のエディ・キュー(Eddy Cue)が相手企業の幹部たちに傲慢な印象を与えてしまったことも含まれるとされている^[8]^[9]。

2016年10月、アップルCEOのティム・クックはテレビに対して「非常に興味深い」と語っており、同社が独自のコンテンツ制作に取り組み始めたことに加え、「（コンテンツ制作は）創造と所有権両方の観点から私たちにとって素晴らしい機会であり、私たちが注力している分野だ」と述べた^[10]。

人員の確保

2017年6月、アップルはソニー・ピクチャーズ・テレビジョンの共同社長であるジェイミー・エリック(Jamie Elricht)とザック・ヴァン・アンバーグ(Zack van Amburg)を引き抜き、番組制作全般を監督する役職に就任させた^[11]^[12]。これを機に多くの人がプロジェクトに参加したため、以降スタッフの獲得と投資が急速に続いた。

オリジナルシリーズ

Apple TV+の発表において、配信作品のタイトル、監督、出演者が発表された。2019年3月現在、配信予定のうち5作品が完成していて、6作品は撮影が進んでいるとしている^[13]。

2019年9月10日、Apple TV+がオリジナルのシリーズ番組8作品とオリジナルのドキュメンタリー1作品の配信が開始されることが発表された。シリーズのほとんどは初め3話ずつ配信され、以降は毎週新しいエピソードが配信されるが、アップルはすべてのシリーズがこのモデルに従うわけではなく、いくつかのシリーズは全話配信される可能性があると述べている^[14]。

発表当初、批評家たちは同サービスが提供する番組数の少なさに対しまちまちの反応を示していたが、コメンテーターはアップルには今後コンテンツ制作会社として成長し高い評価を得る作品を制作する時間があり、特にアップル製品の複数購入でサービスが無料で提供される年には、ユーザーが新しいシリーズを視聴し続け、最終的にサブスクリプション料金を払うようになるだろうと予測している^[15]^[16]^[17]。
